The town of Ipswich in Suffolk is based in the estuary of the River Orwell and is one of England's oldest towns. The original town "named "Gippeswick" was founded in the seventh century, being settled by Frisian potters from the Netherlands. These wares were traded throughout England and over time ipswich became a town of some importance.

The town obtained a royal licence for a mint under King Edger in the 970's. The coins producued by thhis mint bear the name "Gipeswic",

King John granted a charter in 1200AD and for the next four centuries it continued as a wealthy trading town, trading suffolk cloth to the Continent.

In 1797 Lord and Lady Nelson moved to Ipswich and Lord Nelson was, in 1800, appointed High Steward of Ipswich.
